Summary

Geophysical surveys of this site in 2010 and 2025 revealed nothing of definite archaeological interest, with limited trial trenching in 2023 having similarly negative results. More extensive trenching in 2025 revealed only a small number of scattered pits and ditches, all of which were undated.

Map

January-May 2010. Geophysical survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of proposed development area (Areas 15a and 15b).
No anomalies of obvious archaeological significance were identified.
It is noted that this area exhibited a high level of background magnetic noise, suggesting the plough soil is heavily contaminated with ferrous debris, brick rubble, slag or other magnetic debris.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
Results for Area 15a previously recorded separetely as NEHR 64809.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 March 2021. Amended 16 June 2026.

May 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site of proposed electrical substation and route of associated supply cabling.
The nine trenches excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
A trench placed to investigate a north-north-east to south-south-west aligned cropmark visible on aerial photographs (NHER 53467) demonstrated that this coincided with a periglacial feature.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 April 2025.

July 2025. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development area (Area 1).
This survey of a substantial portion of the site revealed nothing of definite archaeological interest. The more notable responses included intermittent linear anomalies running parallel to the western edge of the field and scattered strong discrete anomalies – all of which are regarded as being of undetermined origin.
All the other anomalies recorded are thought to be either natural in origin or the result of recent agricultural activity.
There was no evidence for sub-surface remains associated with a linear cropmark visible on aerial photographs of this location and thought to potentially relate to a former road or trackway (NHER 53467).
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 June 2026.

October-November 2025. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site (Trenches 35-75).
The 41 trenches excavated at this location revealed only a small number of scattered pits and ditches, all of which were undated - finds being limited to burnt flints recovered from two of the pits. A number of the features investigated were deemed to be glacial, including several roughly east-to-west aligned linear features.
There was again no evidence for sub-surface remains associated with a linear cropmark thought to potentially relate to a former road or trackway (NHER 53467).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
