Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2020 recorded a number of pits and ditches, the majority of which produced no dating evidence. Stratified finds were limited to a single sherd of possible Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery and several Roman sherds, all of which were potentially residual within a large probable quarry pit.

Magnetometer survey of area on proposed route of A47 Blofield to North Burlingham dualling.
Examination of strip at northern edge of site (Area L).
Magnetic variation of a possible geological or pedological origin seen across area. It was however possible to identify several positive area anomalies that may represent archaeologically-significant features.

May-July 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of route of proposed A47 Blofield to North Burlingham upgrade works (Trenches 66-70)
The five trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of ditches and pits, the majority of which contained no dating evidence. The one exception was a large probable quarry pit, the fills of which produced a single pottery sherd of possible Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age date and several Roman sherds. It is though quite likely that these were all residual and the pit was the result of much more recent activity.
The majority of the ditches recorded were aligned north-to-south or east-to-west and were therefore potentially of a broadly similar date. Notable exceptions included a single north-west to south-east aligned feature recorded in one of the westernmost trenches.
Other undated features included two pits at the eastern end of the site.
A small number of unstratified finds were recovered, including a prehistoric flint flake, two post-medieval pottery sherds and a fragment of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe.
See report (S3) for further details.
