Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2015 revealed what were probably elements of the same drainage channel. It was regarded as most likely medieval to post-medieval in date but this couldn’t be confirmed as no finds were recovered.

Map

April 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The westernmost of the two trenches excavated revealed a pair of slightly intercut east-to-west aligned ditches. The trench to the east revealed a single east-north-east to west-south-west ditch. The positions of these features suggest that they potentially represented elements of the same drainage channel. Although no finds were recovered a medieval to post-medieval date was seen as the most likely. The available cartographic evidence suggests that this drainage ditch had ceased to be an extant feature at some time prior to the early 19th century.
