Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from concrete in the form of a freestanding pillar. This memorial was erected around 1920 to commemorate forty local servicemen who served in World War One, seven of which were injured and five of which died. Latterly it also commemorates five men who died in World War Two. The memorial was restored in 2004 with marble plaques added and was Listed Grade II in May 2018.

Location: The Green, Norwich Road, Edgefield.
Type: Pillar
Description:
The memorial is constructed from concrete, in the form of a freestanding pillar. It is used to commemorate forty local servicemen who served in World War One, seven of which were injured, and five of which died. Latterly it also commemorates five men who died in World War Two. It is described as supporting “a four-sided head made of stone... The head has a cap sculpted to appear tiled, and surmounting this is a Latin cross on a ball” (S1). The pillar stands on a square concrete base with two tiers, and a low kerb surrounds the whole monument. The World War One dedication is to the east face of the head with five names for the associated dead (Inscription A). Continuing to the north face with seven names for the injured (Inscription B), and to the south face with fourteen names of those who served listed in two columns (Inscription C). The World War One dedication ends to the west face with fourteen more names of those who served, also listed in two columns (Inscription D). The latter World War Two dates are to the east face of the pillar along with five associated names (Inscription E).
Inscription A: TO KEEP IN REMEMBERANCE/ THE MEN OF EDGEFIELD WHO/ SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ FALLEN/ (5 NAMES)/ THE MEN WERE VERY GOOD.
Inscription B: WOUNDED/ (7 NAMES)/ UNTO US AND WE WERE NOT HURT.
Inscription C: SERVED/ (14 NAMES)/ THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US.
Inscription D: SERVED/ (14 NAMES)/ BOTH BY DAY AND NIGHT
Inscription E: 1939 - 1945 / (5 NAMES).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.

2004. Restoration.
The memorial underwent restoration for around £2000. Polished black marble inscription panels were added to replace the weathered original inscriptions.
