Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from a polished grey granite in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. This memorial was erected in May 1920 to commemorate twenty-seven local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly twelve men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in September 2018.

Location: Emneth Cemetery, Opposite St Edmund Parish Churchyard, Church Road (south side), Emneth.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from a polished grey granite, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate twenty-seven local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly twelve men who died in World War Two. It is described as “on a cylindrical column with moulded collar and foot, on a tall four-sided plinth, and three-tiered square stepped base” (S1). There are inscriptions to the plinth in incised lettering, painted black. The former World War One dedication is to the north face (Inscription A). With twenty-seven associated names to the east and west faces, divided into lists of fourteen and thirteen respectively. The latter World War Two dates are to the south face along with twelve associated names (Inscription B; the position of inscriptions identified from S5).
