Summary

An excavation at this site in 2014 revealed several ditches, a line of post-holes and a single pit. The majority of these features produced no dating evidence - the one exception being the pit, which contained a single sherd of early medieval pottery. An adjacent pair of ditches in the southern half of the site coincided with the line of a previously recorded cropmark (NHER 51954).

Map

August-October 2014. Strip Map and Sample Excavation.
Excavation on route of northern Postwick Overflow and Distribution Main pipeline (Area 2).
This short section of the pipeline easement revealed a number of undated features, including three ditches, a group of post-holes and a single pit.
The pit produced a single sherd of early medieval pottery, which was the only find recovered at this location.
The post-holes lay in a roughly north-to-south aligned linear arrangement at the northern end of the site. A sample taken from the fill of one was found to contain sparse charred plant macrofossils that potentially represent hearth debris.
Two adjacent east-to-west aligned ditches towards the southern end of the site corresponded with a previously-recorded linear cropmark that is part of a group believed to represent rectilinear enclosures and field boundaries of medieval to post-medieval date (NHER 51954).
See report (S1) for further details.
