Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2015 saw the investigation of one of several potentially medieval earthwork features recorded in this area (NHER 35473). This feature was shown to survive as a low bank which coincided with three ditches. The bank material appeared to seal at least two of the ditches but unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered from any of these features. A trench to the east partially exposed a large pit that produced a small number of medieval finds.

Map

December 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of proposed development site (Trenches 2-3).
Two trenches were excavated in this grassed area (currently used as paddocks), where earthworks of probable medieval date have been observed on aerial photographs (NHER 35473).
The westernmost trench coincided with a slightly raised north-east to south-west aligned previously recorded earthwork which was still visible on the surface. Although three ditches were exposed, none appeared to be contemporary with the layer of bank material, which was recorded as being sealed by one north-east to south-west aligned ditch and truncated by another. It also appeared to post-date a north-west to south-east aligned ditch. Unfortunately, none of these features produced any dating evidence.
The eastern trench contained a substantial pit of uncertain nature that was more then 8m wide and approximately 0.8m deep. Its single fill produced sherds of medieval pottery, a late medieval brick and a small quantity of animal bone.
