Summary

World War One memorial constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross. This memorial was erected to commemorate twelve local servicemen who died in World War One. The memorial was Listed Grade II in January 2018.

Location: Approximately 36m to the south-west of the Village Hall, Felbrigg Green, Felbrigg.
Type: Latin Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross. It is used to commemorate twelve local servicemen who died in World War One. The memorial has been described with “a sunburst and coronet carved in low relief” where the cross arms intersect, and the carved inscription ‘Victory’ characterised "with the letter ’t’ in the form of a cross rising from the moulded foot of the shaft, like a Calvary”. Furthermore, the shaft is situated on “a pedestal, square on plan, that stands on a single step. The top of the pedestal is moulded forming a shouldered blind arch to each face” (S1). The whole is set within a square enclosure, railed, with corner posts. There are inscriptions to the pedestal carved in low relief. The dedication (Inscription A) is to the front face, with the twelve associated names to the side faces, and the dates (Inscription B) to the rear face.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription A: TO KEEP IN MEMORY THE/ MEN OF FELBRIGGE/ WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE.
Inscription B: 1914 – 1918.
