Full Description
World War One Memorial with World War Two Addition
Location: Briston Road, Melton Constable.
Type: Pillar
Description:
The memorial is constructed from cast concrete blocks with bronze plaques, in the form of a freestanding neoclassical cenotaph. It is used to commemorate nineteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly a single casualty from World War Two. It is described as “a tall, square-sectioned concrete pillar. The pillar is supported on each side by buttress piers surmounted by ornamental scrolled consoles. It is capped by a moulded entablature with the frieze inscribed with the date '1914 - 1918'. A carved laurel wreath which originally rested on the blocking course above the frieze has now been lost” (S1). The whole is situated on a three-tiered base with a curved front. There are inscriptions on the south face of the pillar. The former World War One dedication is to the large central bronze plaque along with the nineteen associated names (Inscription A). Below this, the latter World War Two dates are to a smaller bronze plaque, along with the single associated name (Inscription B; S6).
