Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from red granite in the form of a freestanding Celtic cross. This memorial was erected around 1920 to commemorate five parish residents who died in World War One, and latterly two residents who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in April 2018.

Location: Churchyard of the Church of St Andrew, High Street, Ringstead.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from red granite, in the form of a freestanding Celtic cross. It is used to commemorate five parish residents who died in World War One, and latterly two residents who died in World War Two. The cross is described as polished “with a tapered shaft resting on a trapezoidal plinth and rough-hewn square granite base… on a paved platform reached by steps leading up from the pavement” (S1). There are inscriptions in leaded lettering. The former World War One dedication is to the front face of the plinth with five associated names (Inscription A). The latter World War Two dates are to a polished red granite panel on the base, along with two associated names (Inscription B).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription A: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE RINGSTEAD/ MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR. 1914 – 1918./ (5 NAMES)/ “HE THAT LOSETH HIS LIFE FOR/ MY SAKE SHALL FIND IT”
Inscription B: 1939–1945/ (2 NAMES).
