Summary

This barn probably dates to the early 19th century. Its red brick walls are built on a flint plinth and it has a pantile roof. There a blocked cart entrance and numerous blocked windows in its western hall and a contemporary outshut with catslide roof to the east (which also has a number of blocked openings). Many of its roof timbers appear to be original. A photographic record was made of this building in 2017, ahead of its conversion to a residential dwelling.

Map

Barn to north-west of Hall Farm (NHER 11786).

July 2016. Desk-based Assessment.
Heritage Statement produced to support a planning application for a residential development that would see the conversion of this barn to residential use, the demolition of mid to late 19th-century outbuilding to the north-east (NHER 64849) and the construction of a number of new dwellings.
This barn dates to the late 18th or early 19th century and is one of two extant farm buildings associated with Hall Farm that appear on the Gayton tithe map of 1839 (S1). The other is a long roadside barn at TF 7298 1907 that was converted to residential use as part of a previous development.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

May 2017. Photographic Survey.
Photographic record made of barn ahead of it is proposed conversion to residential use.
This is a threshing barn with red brick walls built on a c.1m high flint plinth, and a pantile roof. A cart door in its western wall is now blocked, as are the majority of its numerous windows. The roof is in nine bays and it appears that many of the timbers are original.
An outshut with a catslide pantile roof is attached to the east side of the barn. This may have been used to house animals, although there is now no evidence of stalls. This structure also has a number of blocked windows and doorways and appears to be contemporary with the main part of the barn.
It is suggest that the barn is most likely of early 19th-century date.
Information from report (S2), in which a range of the photographs taken are reproduced.
P. Watkins (HES), 12 April 2021.
