Summary

World War One memorial constructed from red brick and stone, in the form of a pyramidal roofed structure, with a central market cross to the top, over a plinth. This memorial was erected in June 1921 to commemorate ninety-seven local men who served in World War One, sixteen of which died. The memorial was Listed Grade II in November 2017.

Location: Pitt's Hill, Saxlingham Nethergate.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from red brick and stone, in the form of a pyramidal roofed structure, with a central market cross to the top, over a plinth. It is used to commemorate ninety-seven local men who served in World War One, sixteen of which died. It has been described as “a pin-tile roof covering over an oak frame, and is supported by red brick corner piers” over a central tapered stone plinth with an inlaid bronze plaque (S1). There is a dated inscription along with sixteen names for the deceased (Inscription A) to the bronze plaque, and to the reverse of the stone plinth is the World War One dedication (Inscription B; S5). Stone slabs to the north-east and south-east piers are inscribed with eighty-one names of those who survived, one of which has a further declaration (Inscription C; S5).
Proposed: Date unknown. The form proposed by C. Steward of the Old Hall.
Constructed/Sculpted By: Architect F. W. Troup.
Unveiled: 05 June 1921 (by C. Steward and dedicated by the Bishop of Norwich).
Inscription A: 1914-1918 (16 NAMES).
Inscription B: ON THE PANEL ON THE/ OTHER SIDE OF THIS STONE/ ARE RECORDED THE NAMES/ OF THE MEN WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ "LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER/ SEE THAT THEIR NAMES/ BE NOT FORGOTTEN".
Inscription C: THESE FOUR TABLETS RECORD / THE NAMES OF THE MEN WHO / FOUGHT IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918.
