World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: High Street, Northwold.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Weldon limestone, in the form of a freestanding plain Latin cross. It is used to commemorate thirty local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly nine men who died in World War Two. It is described as standing “upon a three-tiered plinth with moulded upper edges, on a single-stepped base. It stands within a railed enclosure bounded by a semi-circular brick wall at the back. It is approached through a gate in the railings” (S1). There are inscriptions on the upper tier of the plinth, in carved relief lettering. This comprises a World War One dedication to the front face (Inscription A), and thirty associated names divided equally around the remaining three sides (S4). On the base of the memorial there is also an inscription to a front facing slab, in incised and blacked lettering, for the latter World War Two dedication along with nine associated names (Inscription B).
