Summary

A geophysical survey of this site undertaken in 2014 identified a number of linear anomalies, the majority of which correspond with features shown on a late 19th-century map. One of these former field boundaries also appears to coincide with one of several medieval to post-medieval cropmark/earthwork features mapped at the eastern end of the site (NHER 20028).

Map

February 2010. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of large proposed development area.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 January 2023.

Before September 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of large proposed development area between A11 and Norwich Road.
The only potentially archaeologically-significant responses were a number of linear anomalies, four of which correspond with features depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S2). These include three roughly north-to-south aligned former field boundaries and part of a sinuous tree-lined drain or stream at the eastern edge of the site. One of the field boundaries also appears to coincide with one of several cropmark/earthwork features thought to represent medieval to post-medieval features that are recorded at the eastern end of the site (NHER 20028). There was no evidence for sub-surface remains associated with the others.
Although various discrete areas of magnetic enhancement were identified these are all thought to represent changes in the underlying geology. Numerous isolated dipolar anomalies are likely to represent ferrous material within the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 April 2021.
