Map

December 2008-January 2009. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of Anglian Water pipeline (Area A).
The removal of subsoil from a narrow strip at the eastern edge of the easement exposed two ditch and a number of discrete features at this location.
The one feature that could be convincingly dated was a north-to-south aligned ditch at the southern end of the site that produced several post-medieval tile fragments and corresponds with a boundary shown of the Ormesby St Margaret tithe map. A roughly east-to-west aligned ditch at the northern end of the site was potentially of a broadly similar date.
The discrete features included a cluster of three small pits or post-holes revealed close at the ditch at the northern end of the site, all of which had particularly charcoal-rich fills. None produced any dating evidence, although a single sherd of undiagnostic Late Prehistoric pottery was found on the surface of one of them. A single possible pit at the southern end of the site was also undated.
See report (S1) for further details.
