Summary

World War One memorial constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding canopied Calvary. This memorial was erected to commemorate sixteen members of the local community who died in World War One. The memorial was Listed Grade II in August 2018.

Location: Approximately 16m south of St Mary's Church, The churchyard, Low Road, Shelton.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding canopied Calvary. It is used to commemorate sixteen men who died in World War One. Seven of which were from Shelton, and nine from Hardwick. It is described with a shaft, octagonal in section, with “a deep, moulded foot standing on a pedestal. The foot of the cross includes a foliage design carved in low relief within a blind arch to the front face. The pedestal is cruciform on plan, standing on a two-stepped octagonal base” (S1). There are inscriptions to the pedestal in incised lettering. The dedication starts to the front face (Inscription A), with the sixteen associated names listed on across the two side faces, and ends to the rear face (Inscription B).

Inscription B: THEIR NAMES LIVETH FOR/ EVERMORE.
