Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from stone in the form of a freestanding Latin cross 3.5m tall. This memorial was erected to commemorate forty-eight members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly ten men who died in World War Two. The memorial was restored with polished dark granite tablets sometime before 2016 and was Listed Grade II in August 2018.

Location: Approximately 160m north-west of St Mary's Church, Junction of Upgate Street and Recreation Drive, Southery.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross 3.5m tall. It is used to commemorate forty-eight members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly ten men who died in World War Two. It is described with “the cross-head, pierced through the centre, rises from the collar of a slender cross shaft, hexagonal in section. The cross shaft stands on a hexagonal pedestal with shallow cornice [and a chamfered foot], on a four-stepped hexagonal base” (S1). There were original inscriptions, but they are now obscured except for the latter World War Two inscription to the front face of the chamfered foot (position identified from S4 photographs).

Before 2016. Restoration.
Six polished dark granite tablets were attached over the original inscriptions on the faces of the hexagonal pedestal. There are inscriptions to the tablets in incised lettering. A World War One dedication is to the front facing tablet beneath a figure of a wreath. With the forty-eight associated names, along with the ten commemorated from World War Two, listed on the remaining tablets by year of death.
Inscription: The principal dedicatory inscription to the front face of the pedestal reads REMEMBER/ THE MEN OF/ SOUTHERY/ WHO DIED FOR/ KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919.
