Map

July 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site.
No anomalies of obvious archaeological interest were identified.
Two relatively weak linear responses were visible, one of which corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Mattishall tithe map of 1838 (S1). The second is aligned north-east to south-west aligned and may represent a ditch of unknown date. It is though noted that this is also a very straight anomaly, suggesting a relatively modern origin.
Various irregular discrete anomalies are likely to represent variations in the natural geology.
The data was also dominated by a ferrous-type response caused by the pumping station at the western edge of the field, the magnetic ‘halo’ from which may have masked weaker anomalies.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
