Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from granite in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. This memorial was erected in 1920 to commemorate thirty-four members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly ten men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in January 2018.

Location: The Green, Marketplace, Burnham Market.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate thirty-four members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly ten men who died in World War Two. It is described with “Celtic knot work carved into the front face of the cross head.” Rising “from a tapering polished plinth, standing on a two-stepped rough-hewn base” (S1). The whole set within a railed enclosure with eight granite post. There are inscriptions on the plinth in applied metal lettering. The former World War One dedication is to the front face (Inscription A), with twenty-one associated names listed to the side faces. The latter World War Two dedication is to the rear face along with ten associated names (Inscription C).

Unveiled: Erected by November 1920.
Inscription A: IN/ MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/ BURNHAM WESTGATE,/ BURNHAM SUTTON/ AND/ BURNHAM NORTON/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919.
Inscription B: 1939 - 1945/ “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS”/ ST. JOHN CHAPTER 15 13 V/ (10 NAMES).
