Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two addition, constructed from stone in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, Celtic cross. This memorial was erected around 1920 to commemorate nine local servicemen who died in World War One, and the fallen of World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in March 2018.

Location: St Margaret's Churchyard, School Road, Drayton.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, Celtic cross (S5). It is used to commemorate nine local servicemen who died in World War One, and the fallen of World War Two. The cross is described with a “IHS monogram carving at junction of arms” and surmounting a tapering shaft with a three stepped base (S5). There are inscriptions to the base in leaded lettering. The former World War One dedication is to the front face of the upper step (Inscription A), with nine associated names along with service details to the front face of the middle step. Further scripture is to the front face of the lower step (Inscription B). The latter World War Two epitaph is to a side face of the upper step (Inscription C; the position of all inscriptions identified from S4 photographs). Associated names are recorded within St Margret’s Church (NHER7906). The whole memorial is set within “a raised square enclosure of knapped flint walling with shallow flat stone copings” (S1).
