Full Description
January-February 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development site. A total of seventeen trenches were excavated at this location, fourteen at the southern end of the site (Area 2 west; Trenches 14-25, 27 and 29) and a separate group of three at the centre of the field (Area 4; Trenches 68-70).
The trenches at the southern end of the site revealed numerous north-to-south aligned linear features. Some were probably ditches, including a feature that produced a fragment of medieval/post-medieval tile and appears to have corresponded with a former field boundary depicted on the Hethersett tithe map (S1). It is suggested that many of the other features were potentially plough furrows. The date of these features is uncertain as a single Roman pottery sherd was the only other find recovered. Their alignments are however identical to those of the nearby extant and former field boundaries suggesting that they were probably associated with medieval or (more likely) post-medieval agricultural activity.
The three trenches excavated in the central part of the field revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 19 May 2021. Amended 18 January 2024.
September 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of route of proposed new access road (Trenches 3-5).
Three trenches excavated at the northern end of the field revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
No finds were recovered.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 May 2021.
May 2019. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Area 4).
This survey of a block at the northern end of the field revealed no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies.
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 May 2021.
July-August 2019. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of proposed development site (Trenches 45 and 48-62).
The sixteen trenches excavated at the northern end of this site revealed only a single east-to-west aligned ditch. This feature produced no dating evidence but is likely to correspond with another boundary depicted on the Hethersett tithe map (S1).
No finds were recovered in this field.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
