Summary

Archaeological work at this site in 2019 identified a number of post-medieval features including a possible brick kiln. An initial geophysical identified little of obvious archaeological interest apart from a linear anomaly that corresponds with a former field boundary. It did however identify a group of linear and discrete anomalies of uncertain nature in the central part of the field. Subsequent trial trenching demonstrated that these anomalies related to a cluster of post-medieval remains. Few other features of were identified across the remainder of the field apart from the post-medieval ditch that had also been identified by the geophysical survey.

Map

May 2019. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Area 1).
A cluster of potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies was identified in the eastern half of the site, including a weakly enhanced, somewhat irregular ditch-like anomaly that may be part of an enclosure. A number of strongly enhanced discrete anomalies in its vicinity may represent pits of some kind.
The only other anomaly of note was a north-to-south aligned linear anomaly in the western half of the field that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Hethersett tithe map (S1).
Two strongly enhanced linear anomalies in the eastern half of the field were caused by a recently constructed asphalt paths. The majority of the other anomalies were either of probable agricultural origin or caused by ferrous debris.
See report (S2) for further details.

July-August 2019. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site (Trenches 1-44).
The majority of the 44 trenches excavated revealed no archaeologically-significant remains. The main exceptions were a group of five trenches in the central part of the site that revealed a group of post-medieval features, in the area where the preceding geophysical survey had identified a cluster of anomalies of possible interest.
A north-to-south aligned ditch at the western end of the site corresponds with a former post-medieval field boundary and had also been identified by the preceding geophysical survey.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2019.320).
