Summary

A watching brief maintained during groundworks at this site in 2014 recorded no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. It should though be noted that the trenches excavated were relatively shallow and did not penetrate beneath the deep, peaty topsoil present at this location. A single fragment of possible briquetage was the only find recovered.

Map

September 2014. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new residential dwelling within the grounds of The Old Rectory (NHER 40211).
The excavation of foundation trenches for the new building revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. The topsoil was unusually deep and peaty, suggesting this had previously been fairly marshy land.
A large undatable fragment of fired clay was the only find recovered. This is possibly a piece of briquetage associated with salt production, although this identification isn’t certain.
See report (S1) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.268).
