Full Description
September-October 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The four trenches excavated revealed a single gully and a probable modern tree-throw hollow.
The gully was a shallow north-east to south-west aligned feature recorded in two trenches. Although it appeared to respect the line of an extant hedgerow it was sealed by what was interpreted as an alluvial deposit and therefore unlikely to be of recent date. The possible alluvial layer produced two Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flints and a single sherd of Late Saxon Thetford-type pottery. The latter is from a costrel (a type of liquid container), which are rare and a very unusual find at ordinary domestic settlements, being most commonly found at ports and other sites associated with travellers.
See report (S1) for further details.
