Summary

A geophysical survey of this site undertaken in two stages between 2018 and 2020 recorded no anomalies of obvious archaeological significance. Trial trenching within the eastern half of the site in 2020 identified a single ditch and four pits; none of which produced any dating evidence.

Map

March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Area 1).
This survey of the western half of the site identified no anomalies of obvious archaeological-significance. Although numerous discrete patches of magnetic enhancement were recorded these are thought to represent variations in the natural geology. Scattered discrete dipolar anomalies are likely to have been caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
A north-north-west to south-south-east aligned buried service was detected at the western edge of the site.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkin (HES), 6 June 2021.

July-August 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Trenches 1-5).
Five trenches excavated in the western half of the site revealed four pits and a single east-to-west aligned ditch, none of which produced any dating evidence.
The pits were all unremarkable oval features with rounded profiles and apparently sterile fills.
A flint blade of possible Mesolithic/Early Neolithic date was the only unstratified find recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.109).
P. Watkins (HES), 6 June 2021. Amended 27 July 2023.

November-December 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Area 9).
This survey of the eastern half of the site also identified no anomalies of obvious significance.
As with the survey of the area to the west discrete anomalies were thought to either represent variations in the natural geological or indicate the presence of ferrous objects in the topsoil.
A north-north-west to south-south-east aligned buried service was detected in the easternmost part of the site.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 6 June 2021.
