Full Description
July-August 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Trenches 41-45).
The five trenches excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically-significant features.
In one of the trenches a small assemblage of 13 worked flints was recovered from what was thought to be a natural deposit beneath the subsoil. A blade and several blades were potentially Mesolithic/Early Neolithic but the remaining pieces (two cores and a number of flakes) were probably of a later, Late Neolithic/Bronze Age date.
Unfortunately it appears that none of the trenches coincided with the single cropmark recorded at this location (one of a group likely to represent probable field boundaries recorded as NHER 54403).
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.109).

November-December 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Area 11).
This survey identified no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies. There was therefore no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with the single linear cropmark mapped at this location (part of group recorded as NHER 54403).
Although several areas of magnetic disturbance were recorded at the southern end of the site these were not thought to be of interest. Scattered discrete dipolar anomalies are likely to have been caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.
