Summary

A geophysical survey of this site undertaken in two stages between 2018 and 2020 recorded no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies. Trial trenching in 2020 had largely negative results, with only two ditches and a small number of possible pits revealed - none of which produced any dating evidence.

Map

March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Area 5).
This survey saw the examination of land to the south of the stream that bisects this site.
No potentially archaeologically-significant responses were identified.
Although two linear anomalies were recorded, one is probably associated with a field drain and the other is thought to be agricultural in origin. Several discrete areas of magnetic enhancement probably represented changes in the natural geological and numerous dipolar anomalies had probably been caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 June 2021.

July-August 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Trenches 46-48 and 50-54).
The eight trenches excavated at this location revealed a small number of undated features, all of which lay to the south of the stream. These included two ditches (one at each end of the site), a cluster of four small possible pits at the western end of the site and an isolated pit a little way to the east.
No finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.109).

November-December 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Area 13).
This survey of three relatively small areas to the north of the stream recorded no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.
