Full Description
March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Area 6).
This survey of a strip of land adjacent to the A11 identified no anomalies of obvious archaeological-significance.
A number of strong linear responses correspond with a series of modern field divisions.
Although several discrete patches of magnetic enhancement were also recorded these are thought to represent variations in the natural geology. Numerous discrete dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
See report (S1) for further details.

July-August 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Trenches 57-59).
Three trenches were excavated close to the A11, one of which revealed a number of undated linear features. These included two roughly perpendicular shallow features - one of which was slightly curvilinear, raising the possibility that these represented elements of a single, small ring-ditch. Two adjacent north-west to south-east aligned ditches were also recorded in this trench.
No finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.

November-December 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Area 12).
This survey of the remainder of the site identified a small number of potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies, all of which lay at its eastern edge. The most notable is a negative curvilinear anomaly that potentially represents a small ring-ditch. Two weak, parallel, somewhat sinuous linear anomalies were also potentially of interest, although it is possible that they were the result of relatively recent activity of the site. The more extensive of these two anomalies bisected the possible ring-ditch.
Little was identified across the remainder of the area examined apart from a grid of linear anomalies that correspond with modern field divisions and scattered dipolar anomalies that had probably been caused by ferrous debris in the topsoil.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.
