Full Description
April 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Geophysical survey of part of large proposed development area (Field 1).
Only a small number of scattered discrete anomalies were identified as potentially archaeologically significant.
Various other, weaker discrete anomalies are thought to probably represent naturally silted hollows or variations in topsoil depth.
Several parallel linear anomalies are likely to relate to current or recent cultivation.
An area of magnetic disturbance at the western edge of the field probably represents modern debris of some kind.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.

November 2014. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site (Trenches 1-4).
The four trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of linear features and several probable pits. The majority of these features were of uncertain date, although two ditches did produce small amounts of relatively unabraded Late Saxon pottery, suggesting that at least some of the excavated remains may have been associated with activity during this period.
See report (S1) for further details.
These trenches were previously recorded under NHER 61656.

January-February 2022. Excavation.
(Area 2).
Excavation of small area at western edge of site prior to installation of new electrical substation and associated infrastructure (Area 2).
This small excavation area revealed a single discrete feature and three ditches.
The discrete feature was deemed to be of likely natural origin, although it was clearly prehistoric in date – being found to contain a small assemblage of Early Iron Age pottery. The ditches included adjoining short, north-to-south and east-to-west aligned features (the former interrupted) that potentially represented the corner of a small rectilinear enclosure. Two sherd of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery were recovered from this 'L'-shaped feature and small crumbs of similar pottery were found within an east-to-west aligned ditch to the west that terminated (or was lost to truncation) within the excavation area. A sample taken from the fill of this ditch produced a notable quantity of charred cereal grain (including oat and spelt wheat).
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2022.7).
