Location: Newmarket Road, Norwich.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding Blomfield Cross of Sacrifice. It is used to commemorate one hundred and seven local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly thirty-two men, and one woman who died in World War Two. It is described as “a tall Latin cross with an inverted bronze sword to the front (north) face. The cross has an octagonal shaft with moulded foot, which rises from an octagonal plinth upon a two-stepped octagonal base. The whole stands on a two-stepped octagonal platform… The plinth is of three tiers with a stepped back upper section, a taller central section and moulded foot” (S1). There are inscriptions to the plinth in incised lettering for the former World War One dedication, starting to the south-east face, and displayed around the upper section in an anticlockwise direction (Inscription A). The one hundred and seven associated names are then listed, along with rank (S4), to the eight faces of the central section. Dedicatory script then continues to the north-east face, displayed around the foot in an anticlockwise direction (Inscription B). There are also incised inscriptions to the base for the latter World War Two dedication. The dates are to the north face of the upper step (Inscription C), with thirty-three associated names listed, along with rank (S4), to the adjacent sides. With coverage across two faces either side respectively.
