Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. This memorial was erected to commemorate twenty-one members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly nine servicemen who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in August 2018.

Location: The churchyard, St Lawrence's Church, Church Road, Tilney St Lawrence.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate twenty-one members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly nine servicemen who died in World War Two. It is described as “standing on a tall pedestal, with a three-stepped base of another material beneath. The front face of the memorial is polished; the sides are left rough-hewn. The cross is enclosed by eight low pyramidal granite posts that stand on a kerb. The posts are connected by two rows of barley twist iron rails” (S1). There are inscriptions in incised lettering. The former World War One dedication is to the front face of the plinth, along with twenty-one associated names listed in two columns (S4), and the latter World War Two dates (Inscription A). With nine names associated with World War Two listed in a similar format on the front face of the pedestal foot.
