Summary

A geophysical survey of this site revealed two linear anomalies that correspond with former field boundaries shown on a late 19th-century map. A number of other linear anomalies represent field boundaries that had already been removed by this time, although their positions and alignments suggest that they were most likely also post-medieval in date. The only responses that could potentially represent archaeologically-significant remains of earlier date were three short positive linear anomalies.

Map

February 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site.
Although a range of anomalies were identified, these were probably mostly associated with relatively recent agricultural activity.
Two roughly east-to-west aligned linear anomalies correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1). Three perpendicular linear anomalies that extend from these features and two parallel anomalies are all likely to also represent the remains of post-medieval field boundaries (although an earlier origin cannot be entirely discounted). A series of closely spaced, parallel linear anomalies across the site are likely to be the result of modern ploughing.
The only anomalies that could potentially represent archaeologically-significant remains of earlier date were three short positive linear anomalies, two at the east end of the site and one in the north-west corner.
Two extensive strong bipolar linear anomalies are likely to represent underground services. Areas of magnetic variation and disturbance are likely to have been caused by variations in the natural geology and nearby ferrous objects.
See report (S2) for further details.
