Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2014 identified a number of potentially archaeologically-significant responses. These included several straight linear anomalies that are likely to represent former field boundaries of probable post-medieval date. Two shorter, different-aligned linear anomalies may represent remains associated with earlier activity.

Map

January 2008. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed development site comprising land between Tunstead Road and Stalham Road.
This study highlighted the potential for the site to contain evidence for prehistoric, Roman and post-medieval activity.
See report (S1) for further details.

May 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site.
This survey identified a number of potentially archaeologically-significant linear responses. These include a straight north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear anomaly at the eastern edge of the site that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Hoveton St Peter tithe map (S2). A similarly-extensive, parallel linear anomaly to the west and a shorter, perpendicular linear anomaly are both also likely to represent the traces of former post-medieval field boundaries (although the possibility of an earlier origin cannot be entirely discounted).
A short east-to-west aligned linear anomaly at the northern edge of the site and an a 'L'-shaped linear anomaly in the southern half of the field both potentially represent remains associated with earlier activity on the site. The shape of the later suggests that it is possibly the corner of an enclosure.
Although a number of small, weakly-enhanced discrete magnetic anomalies were also identified these are most likely of natural origin.
See report (S3) for further details.
