Summary

A watching brief maintained during the excavation of a cable trench at this location in 2011 recorded little of archaeological interest. The only observation of note was an area of compacted brick rubble, which potentially represented a ditch that had been infilled during the later 20th century.

Civil Parish LUDHAM, NORTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

April-June 2011. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of trench to carry electrical cable for new pumping station.
No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were exposed.
A thin topsoil lay above an orange/brown silt clay, beneath which was a moist grey/black clayey silt.
At approximately TG 3748 1706 a discrete deposit of compacted brick rubble was observed, which possibly represented an infilled ditch. The bricks were Norfolk Reds and probably originated from the nearby mill that had been demolished during the 1960s (NHER 8455).
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2012.229).
