Map

February 1996. Watching Brief.
Fieldwork by NAU in advance of road diversion.
This phase of work saw the investigation of a 11.8m x 6.8m area approximately 15m to the south of where a medieval inhumation cemetery was subsequently discovered (see NHER 31773).
A ditch containing medieval pottery was recorded. To the south of this feature was an area of burning represented by a charcoal-rich clay/silt deposit containing burnt clay lumps. This was sealed by a further deposit of clay.
To the west of this burnt material was a heavily truncated linear scatter of large flints and chalk lumps that possibly represented the remnats of a wall footing.
The finds recovered during this work included prehistoric, Middle Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds, fragments of animal bone, a piece of probable lava quern and several fragments of ceramic building material of unspecified date.
