Full Description
February-March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Area 9).
The most notable response was a strong, rectangular discrete anomaly in the southern part of the field interpreted as a possible kiln. A similar but weaker anomaly was tentatively identified approximately 85m to the north-west. Although a number of other discrete anomalies were recorded in this field these were of uncertain nature.
Various linear anomalies were also recorded, including a number aligned roughly north-to-south and east-to-west. One of the former crosses the entire field and coincides with a former field boundary depicted on the Swainsthorpe tithe map (S1).
Several north-east to south-west and north-west to south-east aligned anomalies potentially represent earlier remains, although these were all regarded as being of undetermined origin and therefore not necessarily associated with archaeologically-significant remains.
See report (S2) for further details.

February-June 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of large proposed development area (Trenches 216-239).
The 24 trenches excavated at this location revealed little in the way of significant remains, with only a small number of scattered ditches and pits recorded - the majority of which produced no dating evidence.
There was some limited evidence for prehistoric activity, although the only feature that could tentatively dated to this period was a small pit that produced two sherds of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age. A sample taken from the fill of this feature contained charcoal, charred seeds and some burnt clay. Although a small assemblage of prehistoric worked flints was recovered most, if not all were probably residual within later features. This was also likely to be the case with a single Late Iron Age pottery sherd recovered from a large quarry pit. A single Roman pottery sherd was also found in an otherwise undated east-north-east to west-south-west aligned ditch.
The small number of features what could be convincingly dated were all post-medieval. These included a group of probable extraction pits at the northern edge of the site that contained post-medieval pottery sherds, brick and tile fragments and iron nails. Material of a similar date and nature was also found in a north-north-east to west-south-west aligned ditch in the south-east corner of the field. A north-to-south aligned ditch can also be identified as post-medieval as it corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Swainsthorpe tithe map (S1).
Undated remains included a number of scattered pits, ditches and possible post-holes, none of which appear to be been particularly notable.
See report (S3) for further details.
