Summary

A watching brief maintained during groundworks at this site in 2016 recorded a sequence of dumped deposits of probable post-medieval date. These were truncated by the remains of a row of cottages visible on a late 19th-century Ordnance Survey map. It appears that they were demolished at some point prior to the 1950s.

Map

December 2016. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of extension to extant dwelling.
A compact chalk deposit was exposed at the northern end of the site, which was overlain by a sequence of dumped deposits that dipped gently towards the south, following the natural slope. A single pottery sherd of 16th- to 17th-century date was recovered from one lower layers.
These deposits were truncated by two foundation trenches containing walls made of flint cobbles and brick. A north-east to south-west aligned wall was the more substantial of the two and had probably been the southern external wall of the associated building. A narrower perpendicular wall extending to the north had probably been internal. A sand deposit associated with these walls had probably been the bedding for an internal floor that had been removed what the building was demolished. The position and orientation of these remains make it highly likely that they were associated with a row of cottage shown at this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1).
See report (S2) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2019.75).
