Summary

Trial trenching at this location in 2015 identified a small number of linear and discrete features, the majority of which lay along the western and southern margins of the site. These included a ditch of possible Roman date and several nearby discrete features that were potentially of a similar age. The majority of the other features produced no dating evidence, the only other exceptions being a linear feature that produced a small amount of Roman pottery and a ditch that contained fragments of ceramic building material (including a medieval or later glazed tile). The remaining, undated features included several other ditches and a small number of scattered possible stake-holes. Three flint flakes and a single Iron Age pottery sherd provided evidence for a least limited prehistoric activity, but were all residual within a later feature.

Map

October 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The 11 trenches excavated revealed a number of linear and discrete features, the majority of which lay in the western and south-westernmost parts of the site. Finds were scarce and these remains were therefore mostly of uncertain date.
Three flint flakes and an Iron Age pottery sherd provided some evidence for prehistoric activity on the site, although these were all recovered from a north-to-south aligned ditch that also produced a small assemblage of Roman pottery. A single Roman pottery sherd was also recovered from one of several adjacent probable post-holes. A pit identified in the same trench had a charcoal-rich fill that also contained fragments of burnt clay and ceramic building material. A sample taken from this deposit produced a single hulled caryopsis of barley but little else in the way of charred plant macrofossils. Two sherds of probable Roman pottery were also recovered from a north-west to south-east aligned linear feature at the southern end of the site.
The other features included several east-to-west aligned ditches that all lay along the western margins of the site - one of which produced a fragment of glazed tile, along with several undiagnostic fragments of ceramic building material.
