Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2019 and 2020 revealed little in the way of significant remains. Although an initial geophysical survey identified a number of linear anomalies these mostly correspond with former field boundaries depicted on a 19th-century tithe map. Subsequent trial trenching exposed several ditches associated with these former boundaries plus a small number of additional ditches and a single possible pit. None produced any dating evidence

Map

November 2019-February 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Areas F9 and F10).
This survey identified a number of linear anomalies, although the majority appear to coincide with former field boundaries depicted on the Hockering tithe map of 1838 (S1). An intermittent west-north-west to east-south-east aligned linear anomaly at the southern edge of the eastern field may however represent an earlier ditch. This appears to turn to the south at its eastern end. A number of discrete patches of magnetic enhancement in the vicinity of this anomaly are regarded as potentially archaeologically-significant, although at least some were probably geological in origin.
Areas of magnetic disturbance around the margins of the site and in a band along one of the former field boundaries were probably caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris), as were a number of scattered discrete dipolar anomalies.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

July-October 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area 13; Trenches 124-127, 130-132 and 147-151, 153-164 and 166).
The 25 trenches excavated at this location revealed only a small number of ditches and a single possible pit, all of which lay at the eastern end of the east field. No dating evidence was recovered, although at least two of the ditches can be identified as post-medieval based on their apparent relationship with former field boundaries depicted on the Hockering tithe map (S1).
The trench place to investigate the potentially archaeologically-significant geophysical anomalies identified at the southern end of the eastern field revealed no corresponding sub-surface remains.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.131).
