Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2019/2020 identified little of potential archaeological interest. Subsequent trial trenching also had largely negative results, with only three features recorded. The most notable of these was a small pit containing Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age Grooved Ware pottery. Several Mesolithic/Neolithic worked flints and a single (presumably intrusive) Roman pottery sherd that were also recovered from this feature represented the only other evidence for activity on the site prior to the post-medieval period. The other two feature exposed were an undated, but probably post-medieval ditch and an undated possible quarry pit.

Map

November 2019-February 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area F13).
This survey identified no anomalies of obviously archaeological significance.
A single north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear anomaly corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on (S1) and a number similarly-aligned linear trends are likely to be the result of relatively recent agricultural activity. Other, more irregular linear trends and discrete areas of magnetic enhancement are regarded as probably geological in origin.
Areas of magnetic disturbance around the margins of the site and scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

July-October 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area 16; Trenches 176-186).
The eleven trenches excavated at this location revealed only three features, the most notable of which was a small, sub-circular shallow pit that contained several sherds of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age Grooved Ware pottery. Three worked flints of probable Mesolithic/Neolithic date were also recovered from this feature, along with a single, presumably intrusive sherd of Roman pottery. It is noted that this pit lay on the crest of a slight hill.
A north-north-east to south-south-west aligned ditch at the western edge of the site produced no dating evidence, although its alignment indicates it was most probably post-medieval.
The third feature was an undated possible quarry pit towards the centred of the site. This coincided with an area of magnetic enhancement identified by the preceding geophysical, although this had been regarded as probably geological in origin.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.131).
