Full Description
November 2019-February 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area F19).
This survey identified no anomalies of potential archaeological significance.
Areas of magnetic disturbance around the margins of the site and scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 July 2021.
July-October 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area 21; Trenches 234-241).
The eight trenches excavated at this location revealed a small number of features, none of which produced anything dating evidence. These included single north-to-south and east-to-west aligned ditches, a steep-sided sub-circular pit with a charcoal-flecked fill and a probable natural tree-throw hollow.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.131).

November 2020-March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Area 26).
This survey identified a discrete anomaly at TG 09753 12662 with a distinctive inverse dipolar magnetic signal of a kind often associated with burnt material – suggesting this could represent the remains of a kiln or oven-type structure. Four other strong discrete anomalies close to the southern and eastern margins of the field are regarded as being of undetermined origin but may represent infilled pit-type features. The only other response of potentially archaeological interest is a short curvilinear anomaly at TG 09809 12551, although this is also categorised as undetermined and may well be of natural origin.
Various scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably the result of ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
See report (S2) for further details.

May-July 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Fields TT01; Trenches 264-279).
This phase of work saw the excavation of 16 trenches across the central and eastern parts of this field. These revealed only a small number of scattered ditches and discrete features, none of which produced any dating evidence. An east-to-west aligned ditch encountered in two of the trenches does though clearly correspond with a former field boundary depicted on the Honingham tithe map (S3). A similarly-aligned ditch approximately 55m to the north and a north-to-south aligned ditch running parallel to the eastern edge of the field were probably of a broadly similar date.
A single pit and a probable tree-root hollow were also recorded. The latter had a dark charcoal-rich primary fill that contained two fragments of fired clay. A sample taken from this deposit contained only charcoal and burnt flint.
There was little correspondence between the results of this work and those of the preceding geophysical survey, with all of the anomalies investigated found to have no corresponding sub-surface remains (it should though be noted that the anomaly potentially associated with burnt material was not amongst those examined).
See report (S4) for further details.
