Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2019 and 2020 identified little in the way of significant remains. An initial geophysical survey of the field identified a single linear anomaly that corresponds with a former post-medieval field boundary. An associated ditch was one of only three features recorded during subsequent trial trenching, the other two being a pair of undated pits with charcoal-rich fills.

Map

November 2019-February 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area F24).
A single east-to-west aligned linear anomaly at the southern end of the site corresponds with a former field boundary shown of the Honingham tithe map (S1).
The only other anomaly of note was a discrete area of magnetic disturbance at the eastern edge of the field that may represent a former quarry pit.
Areas of magnetic disturbance around the margins of the field and scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

July-October 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area 27; Trenches 295-309).
The majority of the 15 trenches excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically-significant remains. The only features observed were a ditch and two pits, none of which produced any dating evidence.
The ditch was an east-to-west aligned feature that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on (S1) and had been identified by the preceding geophysical survey.
The pits also lay at the southern end of the site and were both sub-circular features with charcoal-rich fills. A sample taken from one of these pits was found to contain a small assemblage of charred seeds and a large quantity of fragmented charcoal. It is therefore possible that these were associated with charcoal production.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.131).
