Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2019 and 2020 revealed little in the way of significant remains. An initial geophysical survey recorded no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies and subsequent trial trenching exposed only a single ditch and a large probable quarry pit. Neither feature produced any finds and both were potentially of relatively recent date. There was no evidence for surviving remains associated with a number of fragmentary cropmarks visible on aerial photographs of this location (part of a group of undated features recorded as NHER 53683).

Map

November 2019-February 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area F30).
This survey identified no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies.
Areas of magnetic disturbance around the margins of the site and scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a number of cropmarks previously mapped at this location (part of a group of undated features recorded as NHER 53683).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 11 May 2022.

July-October 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area 36 (east); Trenches 413-417 and 419-423).
The 10 trenches excavated at this location revealed only two features - a single east-to-west aligned ditch and a large probable extraction pit. Neither produced any dating evidence.
As with the preceding geophysical survey there was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with the fragmentary cropmarks recorded at this location (part of a group of undated features recorded as NHER 53683).
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.131).
