Summary

Trial trenching at this site in site in 2020 revealed only a small number of scattered pits and ditches, none of which produced any dating evidence. The only feature of note was a pit with a charcoal-rich fill, which may represent evidence for charcoal production on the site.

July-October 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area 43; Trenches 551-552, 554-555, 557-560 and 563-572).
The 18 trenches excavated at this location revealed four north-to-south aligned ditches and three pits, none of which produced any dating evidence. One of the discrete features had a particularly charcoal-rich fill and was therefore possibly some form of fire pit or the remains of a charcoal clamp. Samples taken from its two fills were found to contain abundant charcoal and a small number of burnt seeds. Another of the pits contained burnt flints.
