Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2019 and 2020 revealed little in the way of significant remains. An initial geophysical survey identified only a single large anomaly likely to represent an infilled quarry pit. Subsequent trial trenching recorded a small number of ditches, a pit and a possible post-hole, the majority of which produced no dating evidence. The pit had a particularly charcoal-rich fill and was therefore potentially associated with small-scale charcoal production. The alignments of the ditches suggested that were probably of relatively recent date, although any associated boundaries had disappeared by at least the mid 19th century. A fragment of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe found in one of these features was the only datable find recovered.

Map

November 2019-February 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area F42).
The only response of note was a large discrete area of magnetic distance at the eastern end of the field. This is likely to represent an infilled quarry pit.
Areas of magnetic disturbance around the margins of the site and scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

July-October 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area 47 (east); Trenches 611-616).
The six trenches excavated at this location revealed three ditches, a pit and a possible post-hole. The ditches were aligned north-to-south and east-to-west, suggesting they probably weren’t of great antiquity, although no corresponding boundaries can be seen on the available 19th-centuy maps. A fragment of clay tobacco pipe found in one of these features was the only datable find recovered.
The single pit recorded had a notably charcoal-rich fill and was therefore probably either some form of fire pit or the remains of a charcoal clamp. Samples taken from its fills produced only frequent charcoal fragments, suggesting the latter interpretation is probably the more likely.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.131).
