Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2016 revealed two ditches and two pits. One of the ditches produced two sherds of Iron Age pottery and was therefore potentially an early feature, particularly as its alignment was distinct from that of the post-medieval and later field system. The other features produced no datable finds, although it is likely that the second ditch and a pit containing the remains of a cow were much more recent.

Map

March 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The six trenches excavated revealed two ditches and two pits in the western half of the site, all of which were overlain by a thick subsoil layer.
One ditch seen in two trenches produced two sherds of Iron Age pottery and was therefore a potentially early feature, particularly as its north-north-west to south-south-east orientation is different to those of the extant boundaries. The second ditch was undated but potentially medieval or post-medieval, its alignment being similar to that of the post-medieval and later field system.
The two pits were also undated, although one found to contain the remains of an adult cow was most likely relatively recent.
The deep subsoil is thought to have formed as a result of medieval and later agricultural activity on the site.
Unstratified finds were limited to a post-medieval lead musket ball and a post-medieval/modern copper alloy drawer handle.
See report (S1) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.337).
