Map

February 2017. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of drainage works within churchyard of St Margaret’s Church (NHER 8618).
The most significant groundworks were the excavation of two soakaway pits, which were dug to a depth of c. 1.90 m below present ground level. A single probable grave was partially revealed in one of the pits, towards the base of a notably deep subsoil deposit. No in situ human remains were exposed, although small assemblages of disarticulated bone were recovered from both soakaway pits.
The other groundworks monitored (including trial holes against the walls of the church and the installation of French drains and surface water drains) exposed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
See report (S1) for further details.
