World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: St Mary's Churchyard, Main Road, West Winch.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Hopton Wood limestone, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross. It is used to commemorate seven local servicemen who died in World War One, and two men who died in World War Two. It is described “with carved wreath and ribbons at the head encircling the relief-carved and painted dates ‘1914 – 1918’, on a tapering, rough-axed shaft, small moulded rough-axed plinth with slightly projecting front section, and two-stepped base that also projects forward at the front” (S1). A granite plaque is inserted into the shaft, with inscriptions in incised lettering. The former World War One dedication with seven associated names (Inscription A) and a latter World War Two dedication with two associated names are listed (Inscription C).

Inscription A: TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND TO THE/ UNDYING HONOUR/ OF THE MEN/ WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ (7 NAMES).
Inscription B: 1939 - 45/ (2 NAMES).

The memorial was refurbished by the Parish Council.

2008. Additions.
The memorial has an additional granite plaque inserted into the plinth. It is used to commemorate three men from Setchey who died in World War One. There is an inscription to the plaque in incised lettering.
Inscription: FROM SETCHEY/ 1914 – 1918/ (3 NAMES).
