Description:
The memorial is constructed from Doulting stone, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross. It is used to commemorate twenty-seven men who served in World War One, two of which died. Latterly it also commemorates a further twenty-seven men who served in World War Two, three of which died. It is described “with flower and foliate relief-carved detailing at the end of each cross-arm” and “a slender, hexagonal shaft that rises from a hexagonal pedestal with moulded foot and a sloped cap; the cap is gabled at three sides”. Each face of the pedestal has a painted heraldic shield in carved relief. The six shields to the faces are the Royal Arms of King George V to the north-west, East Anglia to the west, Diocese of Norwich to the south-west, County of Norfolk to the south-east, Duke of Norfolk to the east, and St Andrew to the north-east. The pedestal is further described topping “a hexagonal plinth upon a single step hexagonal base. The whole is raised up on a platform of regular-coursed, rough-dressed flint with narrow, red brick quoins supported by a wide hexagonal foundation, also of brick” (S1). There are inscriptions to the plinth in incised lettering, painted black.
