Full Description
World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: The churchyard, St Botolph's Church, Gayton Road, Grimston.
Description:
The memorial is 4.5m tall and constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding blind wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate thirty-seven, formerly thirty-eight until one was removed, local servicemen who died in World War One. Latterly it also commemorates two men who died in World War Two. It is described “with finely worked concentric grooves and foliate relief carvings on the cross head, on a tapering shaft, octagonal in cross-section. The cross shaft terminates in a tiered, moulded foot surmounting an octagonal plinth with simple foot, on a three-stepped octagonal base” (S1). There are inscriptions to the plinth in incised, filled lettering. The former World War One dedication is to the front face (Inscription A), with thirty-seven associated names, and an incised rectangle where the name has been removed, listed to the six side faces. The latter World War Two dedication is to the rear face, along with two associated names listed (Inscription B).
